Bastar, the largest but unique district and division of Madhya Pradesh, is a tribal dominated area covered with rugged forests and mountain ranges located in the far-east south part of the state, which is moving towards development while preserving its ancient culture and traditions alive. In ancient times, it was known as the sub geographical region called Dandakaranya where traditional culture has been a unit.
Before the merger of the state, Bastar district was formed in 1948 by combining both the princely states of Bastar and Kanker. Which is the first largest district in the state and the third largest district in the country in terms of area. Before independence, Bastar princely state had seven (7) parganas located around Jagdalpur and eighteen (18) forts located to the north of Indravati river and twelve amindaris located in the south west.
