Abstract [English]

The history of medieval India is not limited to political struggles and imperial expansion; it is equally recognized as a period of literary, scientific, and cultural flourishing. During this era, several rulers contributed not only to governance and territorial strength but also to the advancement of knowledge, art, and literature. Among them, the Paramara ruler King Bhoja stands out as a celebrated and visionary patron of arts and learning.

King Bhoja was himself a scholar and a generous supporter of intellectual pursuits. His fame continues to resonate across India due to his deep engagement with cultural and artistic development. Historical traditions attribute to him a long and prosperous reign, during which he composed and patronized numerous scholarly works. One of the most significant texts associated with him is Samarangana Sutradhara, a comprehensive treatise that discusses architecture, sculpture, temple design, and allied arts, demonstrating his wide-ranging artistic vision.

To promote learning, Bhoja established the famed Bhojshala in Dhar, an architectural and educational landmark. He also commissioned major architectural works, including the grand Shiva temple at Bhojpur, known for its monumental scale and craftsmanship. Nearby hydraulic constructions, such as large dams and reservoirs, reveal his concern for urban planning and water management. In Bhopal, several lakes attributed to his initiatives ensured sustainable water supply for the region.

Thus, King Bhoja’s legacy extends far beyond political history. His patronage of architecture, sculpture, literature, and infrastructure firmly establishes him as one of the great cultural architects of Indian civilization.
