A ROLE OF COMMUNALISM IN BHISHAM SAHNI'S TAMAS

Abstract [English]

Bhisham Sahni has a prominent place in Hindi fiction. Bhisham Sahni effectively portrays the reality of social life in his literature. His literature is sympathetic and realistic. Whatever Bhisham saw and experienced in the society became the subject of his literature. He has said about his works- "My experiences in the field of literature have been as simple and straightforward as in life. I believe that there is no such thing as literature apart from oneself. I will be able to create stories as I am." Like in the novel Tamas, the fire of communalism spread among the common people due to the divide and rule policy of the British. It depicts the helplessness of the people suffering from tension and terror and the society burning in this fire. Those who were killed in communal riots were mostly poor and weaker sections of society. These were the ones who were hurt the most. People from the upper class usually lived in safe conditions and helped each other.

हिन्दी कथा साहित्य में भीष्म साहनी का प्रमुक स्थान है। भीष्म साहनी सामाजिक जीवन के यथार्थ को प्रभावपूर्ण ढंग से अपने साहित्य में चित्रित करते हैं। उनका साहित्य सहानुभूतिपरक और वास्तविक है। भीष्म ने जो कुछ समाज में देखा, अनुभव किया वही सब उनके साहित्य का विषय बना। उन्होंने अपनी रचनाओं के बारे में कहा है–‘‘साहित्यके क्षेत्र में मेरे अनुभव वैसे ही सपाट और सीधे सादे ही रहे, जैसे जीवन में। मैं समझता हूँ, अपने से अलग साहित्य नाम की कोई चीज भी नहीं होती। जैसा मैं हूँ वैसी ही मैं चरनाएँ भी रच पाऊँगा।’’ जैसे तमस उपन्यास में अंग्रेजों की फूट डालो, राज करो नीति से आम जनता में साम्प्रदायिकता की आग फैल गयी। इस आग में झुलसते समाज, तनाव एवं आतंक ग्रस्त लोगों की विवशत का चित्रण इसमें है। साम्प्रदायिक दंगों में जिनकी हत्या हुई, वे अधिकतर गरीब और कमजोर वर्ग के लोग ही थे। इन्हीं को सब से ज्यादा आहत होना था। उच्च वर्ग के लोग प्राय: सुरक्षित स्थितियों में रहकर एक दूसरे को सहयोग देते थे।
