The present paper clarifies the concept of information and communication technology. It will elaborate on the objectives of information and communication technology in libraries, benefits of information and communication technology for libraries, impact of information and communication technology on libraries and the role of librarians in the environment of information and communication technology. The main aim of this chapter is to make the readers understand the impacts of ICT on library environment, impacts of ICT on information formats, access and distribution, identify ICT as a tool which librarians should use to accomplish their goals.

प्रस्तुत लेख सूचना और संचार प्रौद्योगिकी की धारणा को स्पष्ट करता है। पुस्तकालयों में सूचना और संचार प्रौद्योगिकी के उद्देश्य, पुस्तकालयों के लिए सूचना और संचार प्रौद्योगिकी के लाभ, पुस्तकालयों पर सूचना और संचार प्रौद्योगिकी का प्रभाव और सूचना और संचार प्रौद्योगिकी के परिवेष में पुस्तकालयाध्यक्षों की भूमिका को विस्तारित करेगा। इस अध्याय का मुख्य लक्ष्य पाठकों के लिए पुस्तकालयों के माहौल पर सूचना और संचार प्रौद्योगिकी के प्रभावों, सूचना प्रारूपों, पहुंच और वितरण पर सूचना और संचार प्रौद्योगिकी के प्रभावों को समझना, सूचना और संचार प्रौद्योगिकी को ऐसे उपकरण के रूप में पहचानना है, जिसे पुस्तकालयाध्यक्षों को पूरा करने के लिए उपयोग करना चाहिए।
