Craftsmanship of Kuppadam Pattu Chirala handloom saris, crafted from cotton, are distinguished by their contrasting borders and intricate hand butta designs woven with golden zari. The softness of the fabric is determined by the variable thread count used in weaving. Currently, around 5,000 looms are dedicated to weaving Kuppadam saris. The process begins with washing the yarn, which is then dyed in a boiler where it is turned to ensure even color absorption. A crucial step in this process is the mixing of colors, which imparts a unique and durable hue to the fabric. After dyeing, the yarn is washed and dried again before being starched. Starching makes the color more permanent and gives the yarn a polished look. Figure 1
Master weavers purchase the starched yarn from merchants and distribute it to other weavers. The yarn is then spun into thread using a spinning wheel called "charkha," which is used for the weft. Next, the yarn is loaded into the warp. The length of yarn used in the warp is called "pacham," with one pacham of Chirala measuring 36 yards, enough to make six saris. Once the pacham is loaded onto the loom, the weaving process begins. Chirala handloom saris are celebrated for their softness and durability, making them comfortable to wear in any climate. While traditionally these looms produced only saris, they now also weave dress materials to meet demand. Each saree is a tribute to the rich cultural legacy of the area, embellished with intricate zari work and traditional motifs like peacocks, elephants, and flowers.
